International Index to Black Periodicals (IIBP)

International Index to Black Periodicals (IIBP)
IIBP includes current and retrospective bibliographic citations and abstracts from scholarly journals and newsletters from the United States, Africa and the Caribbean, and full-text coverage of core Black Studies periodicals. See this journal title list (Excel format) for periodicals included. Most IIBP records in the current coverage contain an abstract, and additionally many IIBP records contain the corresponding full text of the original article. Coverage is international in scope and multidisciplinary, spanning cultural, economic, historical, religious, social, and political issues of vital importance to the Black Studies discipline. Most journals are indexed cover-to-cover. For some journals not directly focused on African-Americans, Africa or the African diaspora, only selected articles relevant to the discipline of Black Studies are indexed. The journal list was prepared with the guidance of an advisory board including librarians specializing in Black Studies: Carol A. Rudisell, Associate Librarian, University of Delaware Library and Dorothy Ann Washington, Librarian, Black Cultural Center, Purdue University. Click to read more

African American Funnel Project

African American Subject Funnel Project
The African American Subject Funnel Project was constituted in the Spring of 2000 in order to contribute subject headings for inclusion in Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) through the SACO (Subject Authority Cooperative) Program of the PCC. This project developed through collaborative efforts between the Library of Congress and the African American Studies Librarians Section of the Association of College and Research Libraries. It is open to catalogers, reference librarians, and anyone else who wishes to participate. The current funnel project coordinator is Dorothy Washington, Purdue University, Black Cultural Center. Please note that the coordinator currently works at Purdue University, Black Cultural Center; however, the library is not in any way responsible for the project.

The funnel project is concentrating on the creation of new subject headings and the changing or updating of old subject headings relating to the African American experience. Through this project participants of the funnel will focus on providing and improving access to African American resources. To date, a variety of headings have been proposed such as: African American---Reparations and African American social reformers. Subject changes have also been proposed and accepted which include changing the heading Afro-American to African American. Click to read more
